How to identify a bogus call

It is noted that bogus telephone calls purported to be made by banks (referred to as “bogus calls” thereafter) have incessantly continued to emerge. In this article, we will analyze the common techniques used by fraudsters, share five tips for identifying bogus calls and guide you what to do when you receive a bogus call.
 
Common techniques used by fraudsters
 
A fraudster will pose as a staff member from a financial institution and invite you to apply for a loan or other banking services via phone calls or chat apps. Once a bogus call or chat progresses, the fraudster will usually request sensitive personal information.
 
  
5 tips to identify a bogus call
 
Here is a list of tips that could help you identify a bogus call:
 
  • The caller refuses to disclose his or her identity and does not provide a callback number
  • The caller or a pre-recorded message claims that there are irregularities with your bank account  
  • The caller does not disclose his or her name or which department he or she belongs to
  • The caller focuses on trying to sell you credit products or services with a low interest rate, such as personal loans.  
  • The caller asks for sensitive information, such as your ORIX Asia e-Statement login details or account number.

What to do when you receive a bogus call  
 

If you suspect or become aware that you have received a bogus call, please take the following steps:

  1. Hang up at once.

  2. If you told the suspected fraudsters your password, change it immediately.

  3. If you have shared sensitive information or conducted transactions with suspected fraudsters, report the matter to the police immediately and contact us without delay.

  4. Report the bogus call number to the Police through the Public Intelligence platform of “Scameter+” mobile application launched by the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau of the Hong Kong Police Force.
